Position Overview: Join Long Island Housing Services (LIHS), a dynamic, 56-year-old civil rights nonprofit dedicated to ending housing discrimination and promoting inclusive communities across Nassau and Suffolk Counties. As a Fair Housing Investigator, you’ll play a pivotal role in the enforcement of fair housing laws, directly empowering our Long Island neighbors to secure housing of their choice, free from discrimination.

Salary: $60,970.00 annually, which is an hourly rate of $33.50, plus comprehensive benefits. Bilingual English-Spanish candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct intake interviews and counsel clients on fair housing issues.
• Investigate allegations of housing discrimination based on race, national origin, religion, age, sex, color, marital status, disability (mental and physical), familial status, veteran status, military status, ethnicity, immigration status, citizenship, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, and source of income.
• Design, organize, and execute fair housing tests to investigate discriminatory practices by real estate professionals including in home purchase and sale, rentals, lending, and insurance.
• Recruit, train, and supervise testers. Coordinate testing operations and ensure integrity through comprehensive debriefings.
• Analyze test data, prepare detailed investigative reports, and identify patterns to support enforcement actions.
• Support judicial or administrative processes by drafting complaints, interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, and providing testimony in court.
• Prepare regular progress reports in collaboration with Fair Housing Program staff.
• Represent LIHS at professional seminars, training sessions, and conferences (some travel required).

Qualifications:
• Deep commitment to civil rights, equal housing opportunity, integration and decent, affordable housing.
• Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including experience in public speaking and advocacy.
• Proven ability to analyze complex information from a legal perspective and clearly explain findings in writing and verbally.
• Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and work independently in a fast-paced environment. Congeniality with team members is essential.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and internet research. Typing proficiency (minimum 40 WPM). Strong math skills.
• Personal composure, professionalism, and comfort interacting respectfully with diverse populations from varied racial, cultural, economic, and lifestyle backgrounds.
• Punctuality and flexibility to occasionally work evenings and weekends.
• Reliable, personal motor vehicle transportation with insurance coverage required by New York state law, current and valid New York state driver’s license, good driving record and willingness to travel within Nassau and Suffolk counties for work-related activities. Must demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of this job.
